Chances are you woke up happy today if you live in Utah, Minnesota, or North Dakota. They rank as the top three happiest states to live in, according to a recent analysis. Conducted by the financial information site Wallet Hub, the study assessed 50 states and the District of Columbia for three key elements that affect people’s contentment with life: emotional and physical well-being; community, environment and recreational activities; and work.
The complete list of the top 10 states that are home to the happiest Americans:
1. Utah
2. Minnesota
3. North Dakota
4. Colorado
5. Nebraska
6. Wyoming
7. Iowa
8. Hawaii
9. South Dakota
10. Idaho
The least bliss-inducing states: Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama and West Virginia.
The number crunchers behind the survey examined statistics including states’ divorce rates, safety records, volunteerism rates, level of sports participation—and prevalence of sleep. (Parents in New Jersey, New York and West Virginia are most likely to yawn while reading this.)
No matter where your state falls (mine is in the “meh” zone), no matter what statistics may say, as parents we know the truth: Wherever you live, whatever challenges you face, you can raise happy kids.
